What does a kitchen and pantry tracker do?

A pantry tracker is a list of food you have at home, with quantities, storage locations and recorded dates. It helps answer three everyday questions: what is left, what needs attention, and what is missing from the next shop.

The useful part is keeping that list current. Adding a full bag of rice once will not tell an app that half of it went into dinner. In iGarde, you review what you add and record food used or binned. Reminders refer to the dates you record; they do not decide whether food is safe to eat.

Start with three foods, then build the habit

  1. Add what you actually have. Add three foods by hand: for example rice, milk and a tin of tomatoes. Record the amount, storage location and the date shown on the packaging. You do not need to catalogue every cupboard on day one.
  2. Review a receipt after shopping. On-device receipt scanning can help add a shop. Check food names, pack sizes and quantities before applying the entries. Check packaging dates separately; a receipt does not supply every pack’s use-by date.
  3. Check Today and Pantry. See food needing attention in Today and check the available quantities in Pantry before deciding what to buy. Add the gaps to your shopping list.
  4. Update after use. Record an item as used, partially used or binned. Correct the remaining amount when the list and the kitchen disagree.

Track the open pack, not just the shopping receipt

An inventory that says “one bag” can be misleading once the bag is open. Here is a worked quantity example you can follow in iGarde.

A 500 g bag of rice across two meals

  1. Add rice with 500 g available.
  2. Use 250 g. In Pantry, choose Used some, select ½, check the preview and tap Mark used. The remaining amount is 250 g.
  3. Use another 125 g. Choose ½ again: half of the amount currently left. Now 125 g remains.
  4. For a different amount, edit the remaining quantity to reflect the pack. Use the Undo message while it is visible if you chose the wrong action.

This is an illustrative example, separate from the food shown in the screenshots. It does not claim that the app measured a meal or watched you cook.

For the full routine, read how to keep a pantry inventory up to date. Before your next shop, try the reverse shopping list example: plan around the food already at home, then list the gaps.

With Plus, check a recipe against your recorded pantry ingredients to see what is available and what is missing. In Cook Mode, tapping Done on the final step updates matched pantry quantities. Check that result before recording the same use manually.

UK Plus pricing is £2.49 per month or £19.99 per year. Eligible new subscribers can receive a two-week free trial. The App Store determines eligibility; the selected plan renews automatically unless cancelled. Check the offer in the app before subscribing.

Should you use a pantry app or a spreadsheet?

A paper list or spreadsheet may be enough if you track a few cupboard staples. Choose an app when its reminders, receipt review or quantity updates fit the way you shop and cook.

Pantry tracker questions

Is there a free pantry tracker for iPhone?

Yes. iGarde’s pantry, Today, reminders, shopping list, everyday use updates and on-device receipt scanning are free with no time limit. Recipes, Cook Mode, household sync and other Plus tools are optional.

Can I track food in the fridge and freezer too?

Yes. Record the storage location for food in your pantry, fridge or freezer, along with quantities and dates. Check that the recorded location matches where you put it.

Does iGarde add groceries with a barcode scanner?

iGarde’s adding methods are manual entry, receipt scanning and a shelf-photo scan. It does not offer product barcode scanning. The first shelf scan is free; further scans require Plus and have usage limits.

Will the inventory update itself as I eat?

You need to record use, waste and corrections. With Plus, the final Done action in Cook Mode updates matched ingredients. There is no continuous monitoring of your kitchen.

Can I use iGarde on Android or in a browser?

The current app is for iPhone running iOS 17 or later. This website explains the product; it is not a browser-based pantry tracker.

Does receipt scanning require AI processing?

On-device receipt reading is separate from optional AI cleanup. AI receipt cleanup is a Plus feature that sends receipt text to Anthropic in the US with permission. Shelf-photo processing sends the chosen photo with permission. Read the privacy policy for details.
